Fred Hall

Excelsior College

SCADA Technician, UGI Utility, IBEW Local 2244

Fred Hall is one step closer to his ultimate goal of becoming a Professional Engineer (PE) thanks to Excelsior College’s online Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET) degree program. Fred had completed his two-year Electrical Engineering Technology degree at Penn State, but life circumstances prevented him from completing his Bachelor’s degree.

After starting with his current employer, UGI Utility, Fred was determined to finish what he started. As a SCADA Technician for UGI Utility, Fred is responsible for the installation and maintenance of all electronics related with a gas utility. He is currently responsible for SCADA responsibilities associated with the PennEast and Sunbury pipelines, which transport Marcellus and Shale natural gas.

“One of the biggest selling points of Excelsior’s program for me, beside the flexibility of being online, was the fact that it was ABET accredited. That’s step one on the path to become a PE – earning an ABET-accredited Bachelor’s degree.” Fred said. “I’m planning to sit for the Engineer in Training (EIT) Exam, which is the next step. Eventually, I plan to earn my Professional Engineer license so I can be the one stamping the documents and putting my name to a set of blue prints,” he added.

When asked if Fred would recommend the program to others, he said he would, and already has. Fred noted, “I’ve encouraged one of my co-workers to complete the BSEET program [through Excelsior] as well. Before he can progress to the next level in his career, he has to get the education behind him.  I’ve told him this program will provide what he needs.”
